Raku pottery is a type of Japanese ceramics traditionally used in tea ceremonies, known for its distinctive firing process and unique, often unpredictable finishes. It originated in the 16th century and is closely associated with Zen Buddhist aesthetics—emphasizing simplicity, naturalness, and spontaneity.
After firing, pieces are removed from the kiln while still glowing hot and often placed in combustible materials (like sawdust, paper or leaves), which ignite and create a reduction atmosphere. This process affects the glazes, creating unpredictable colors, metallic finishes, and crackled surfaces.
